James “J Dilla” Yancey passed from Lupus in 2006 at the age of 32, immediately becoming recognized by the world media as one of the most prolific music creators in the history of hip hop. His work with Janet Jackson, Common, D’Angelo, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, A Tribe Called Quest and more helped circulate J Dilla’s music throughout the world.
In 2011, Mrs. Maureen Yancey, mother of J Dilla, formed Yancey Music Group (YMG) after years of struggle to legally secure the rights to her son’s music. With a team of industry professionals, YMG is now set to properly distribute the recordings of the man who is the bridge between Detroit hip hop and the Motown sound. The Rebirth Of Detroit will be the first release from YMG, featuring a number of star guest appearances from many of Detroit music’s finest artists.
“Dilla Day Detroit” will be DJ’ed by J Rocc from the legendary Beat Junkies Crew. The concert will be simulcast via the web, as well as a number of J Dilla birthday events from Sao Paulo, Brazil, London, Tokyo and Melbourne, Australia, among others.
Also supported by the event will be the J Dilla Foundation, a non-profit organization for the funding of music education programs for children within the city of Detroit. The J Dilla Foundation offers grants, scholarships, instrument placements and partnerships with high schools and community music programs.
Tickets for Dilla Day Detroit will be available through Ticketmaster and LiveNation.com, and will cost $25, on sale January 16. Get TICKETS HERE
